Dr Anne Sarah Rubin Seminar: ‘Mapping Memory: Sherman’s March and America’

On Friday afternoon, 13 Feb. 2015, Dr. Anne Sarah Rubin (http://annesarahrubin.com) of the University of Maryland stopped by the University of Dundee on a whirlwind tour of Scotland, organized by the U.S. Consulate General (Edinburgh) to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the end of the American Civil War. Dr. Rubin taught a fascinating, hands-on seminar on her puDSC04636blic history website ‘Mapping Memory: Sherman’s March and America’ (http://shermansmarch.org/). Responding to what she showed of her website and the reasoning behind it, the seminar participants discussed with her the boundaries between fiction and non-fiction, how and where to reference primary sources on a website, and the challenges faced by historians in ‘simplifying’ historical knowledge for the benefit of the general public. The stimulating discussion was a perfect start of the holiday weekend!
