Global Challenges Research Fund Workshop- Urban Futures Scotland and India
University of Dundee December 7 and 8 2017
Historians, Urbanists, Legal Scholars, Digital Researchers and Architects from the University of Dundee, Abertay University and Jindal Global University conducted a lively two-day workshop at the Centre for Global History responding to the RCUK Sustainable Cities Global Challenge. Global political, economic and cultural conditions pose challenges to cities in Scotland and in India, though of different types and on different scales. Over two days the workshop explored what new forms of partnership-based pedagogy and research can articulate the work of the universities with civic and national bodies. The most striking conclusion from the workshop, for me, was that even though the challenges to the universities were very different in different urban contexts, the strategies available to us to respond to those challenges were similar. In all cases engagement and partnership are the routes to impactful research, and there is an urgent demand for new understandings of the research process that go beyond Knowledge Transfer to co-creation. We are looking forward to working with our colleagues on topics from poverty alleviation to cultural inclusion.
